Caution: Stupid Idea Ahead

Earlier today, brudder Evan and I were having one of our highly regular, highly intellectual brainstorming sessions over msn.

We were talking file sharing and the possibility of P2P companies collaborating with music recording firms. At the moment, the file sharing fellas seem less interested in making heaps of money and more interested in developing better P2P networks. We all know that this has eaten away at record labels' profits like, well, something very hungry.

So, what we were thinking is that both parties could work together, ie. the file sharing guys bought the rights to allow their users to download songs and stuff, and then charge (perhaps) a monthly fee and set limits on the number of downloads per month, a bit like some companies have already done. This way, they make proper money while still being able to do their development work, the music companies lose less money to illegal file sharing, and both sides save time and money fighting in court.

At this point in the discussion, the idea had so many holes that it could've been used in a Polo mint ad. The e-relevant solution? Forget about making everyone a winner, it requires too much thought. Get the record companies to make money by putting RANDOM ADVERTS in their songs! The advertising revenues would help compensate for reduced CD sales, and the advertising companies would definitely go for it because of the sheer number of ppl that will be exposed to these ads, the way that digital music spreads like wildfire. Sure, it would irritate the pants off listeners, but what choice would they have? Consumer rights groups might step in, in which case the next step could be to use musical adverts, (clumsily) blending jingles inbetween verses.

I can hear it now..

"..I don't wanna close my eyes,
I don't wanna fall asleep,
Cause I'd miss you babe,
And I don't wanna miss a thing"

"Nescafe, nescafeeee,
So arooomatiic, so smooooth..OLE!
Nescafe. For the times when you don't wanna close your eyes"

"Cause even when I dream of you,
The sweetest dream would never do,
I'd still miss you babe,
And I don't wanna miss a thing.."
